Genetic testing was performed and showed an inactivating mutation in the tumor-suppressor gene encoding phosphatase and tensin homologue (PTEN). The Cowden syndrome, an autosomal dominant PTEN hamartoma syndrome, is associated with an increased risk of breast, thyroid, endometrial, and other cancers.
